Following an excellent performance against Kilsyth in the league cup opener only 3 days before, Dunipace would have been in confident mood coming into this local derby with rivals Rob Roy.

Only a last minute equaliser by Kilsyth saw them snatch a point from a game Dunipace had controlled for large spells and manager Derek Barron would have been looking for the same commitment and stylish football that his troops provided on a wet Wednesday evening in Kilsyth.

Deep in Thought

With John McPhail (Hamstring), Barry Rodgor (Suspension), Keiron McIllduff (Knee) and long term injury victim Gary MacMillan (Knee) missing, the Pace gaffer had a strong squad to choose from and opted for a side not too far from the one that played so well in Kilsyth.

The opening to the game was promising, with Dunipace passing the ball well in the opening 5 minutes. Rob Roy too were playing some decent stuff when they got on the ball. Everything pointed towards an entertaining game and that was indeed how it was to turn out, albeit apart from the result from a Dunipace perspective.

The opening goal came after around 20 minutes. Some slack play in midfield allowed Rob Roy to press forward onto the home defence and with Graeme MacMillan and Warner Devlin both occupying the wide positions in pursuit of their forwards a neat ball inside allowed the Rob Roy Midfielder to advance towards the box. With James Orr having no option but to pressure the man on the ball the Rabs player slid the ball inside to his unmarked teammate for the easiest of tap ins.

Dunipace tried to play football but were finding it difficult to slip into the same gear they had found in the previous game. They were however to find themselves unfortunate not to level midway through the half when the clever Wright darted into the box to collect an excellent through ball. The midfielder's touch was excellent and he did everything right in sliding the ball under the onrushing keeper only to see it hit his backside and skim of the slick surface onto THE BAR! On a dry day it would surely have been 1 - 1, but it was not to be for the youngster who had another excellent atempt saved by the keeper only moments later.

The second goal, when it did come, was to be for the visitors. Again Dunipace will be uspet by the defending that contributed to the goal, where the Rabs midfielder was allowed to cross from the right to a striker who was allowed far too much space to head against the crossbar. Quickest to react was the visiting forward who followed in to head home the rebound

At 2 - 0 Dunipace still had a chance and were themselves creating good chances, but just before half time though another goal for the hosts all but killed the tie. A soft free kick on the edge of the area was smashed into the wall by ex Dunipace man Stuart Morrison. Morrison was then first to react to the rebound and his deflected shot left Strachan in goal with little chance as it nestled in the corner.

The second half saw the Gaffer replace Tonner with Nairn and move Pincombe into a wide area and Nairn was to cause the visitors some problems in the second period.

Warner Devlin

Both sides created some good chances, with the Pace's best falling to Gordon Adam from 6 yards but the big midfielder could only fire against the keeper. Marty Wright also drew a fine save from the visitors keeper, who reacted quickly to keep out Nairns follow up as well.

Rob Roy hit the post at the end of a sweeping move that saw a delivery from the right met by the head of the forward and Dunipace didn't heed the warning as the fourth goal came from an almost identical route. A ball in from the right found the far side midfielder free in the box to head past the helpless Strachan in the home goal.

Not the result or performance that Dunipace were looking for but they can take something from the amount of chances they created and in spells some of the football played against opposition 3 leagues above them.

Saturday sees the final game of the league cup group stage at home versus Cumbernauld in another local derby. Dunipace will be hoping for a good result and good performance to see them into the start of the league campaign.
