The first league fixture of the season brough newly reformed Newmains to Westfield after a period away from Junior football. Dunipace though, with high hopes for this season, were not to make their visitors return one
they will likely want to remember.
The opening to the game was scrappy, with neither side managing to string any decent passing sequences together, Dunipace finding it hard to find the passing game that had been so impressive during their league cup campaign.
There were however chances. The first fell to Marty Wright, who found himself in the box with no-one around. The midfielder though had more time than he realised and fired a quick shot straight at the keeper.
Newmains also created a couple of decent chances, the first from a header that sailed high over the bar and the second a shot from inside the area that was turned around the post by a McCafferty block.
Following these opening exchanges Dunipace did manage to get the foot on the ball and begin to play, with Cairney and McPhail in the wide areas getting on the ball with ease and Grant pulling the strings in the middle of the park.
The opening goal when it came was from a familiar root. Wright, who has scored freely throughout the pre-season and league cup games, was on hand with a superbly controlled left foot half volley from the edge of the area that found the keepers
bottom right hand corner.
And the second wasn't far behind as Dunipace began to control the game. Rodgors found Wright inside the area and Wright skipped beyond the outrushing keeper before squaring the ball to McPhail, who had made a great support run from the left flank,
to score his first goal for the Pace.

After the break, Dunipace continued to press the game and Strachan in the home goal was very quiet as the visitors struggled to create any real chances.
The third goal, 10 minutes into the half, was one that brought a smile to most faces connected with Dunipace as Michael McCafferty turned in a Chris Cairney corner for his first goal for the Pace since returning from serious injury. It took him a while to get it, but
none the less a great moment for the big stopper and everyone involved!
With the game over as a contest Dunipace made a few changes, Wright and Rodgor rested and McPhail given a break after returning from a hamstring injury.
Dunipace though continued to press looking for more and goal number 4 when it came was to be an excellent one. Some good build up play found Grant 25 yards out. His first time flick found Moffat on the edge of the area who duelly obliged with a great
touch of his own back into the path of Grant who had spun off his marker after making the pass. Moffat's touch landed perfectly into the path of the midfielder who smashed low into the bottom corner, the keepers hand unable to stop it.
David Nairn had a couple of chances before another excellent goal was to round off the scoring. Another through ball from Moffat found Cairney behind the full back on the right. His cutback found the unmarked Pincombe at the back post who tapped home
for number 5.
Another impressive performance from Dunipace to kick off the league campaign. Newmains too will be able to take the positives from thier return to this level of football where they showed more than enough to suggest that they will be a decent side once they find
their feet. For Dunipace though, this will hopefully be the first victory in a run that everyone connected with the club hopes will bring about a return to the first division next season.
