Coming into the final game of the league cup sections for this season and with no chance of qualification Dunipace were looking to put on a good performance against local rivals Cumbernauld to take into next weeks league opener versus Newmains.

Starting the game brightly Dunipace were quickly in control, strong at the back goalkeeper Gary Strachan spent the early part of the game as a spectator as Dunipace passed the ball well through midfield and began to cause problems for the visitors. A series of half chances were to be passed up by the home side before young Marty Wright, again having a large influence on proceedings was to open the scoring.

Celebration

A through ball saw the midfielder take his touch and one on one with the defender turned him easily to drill below the goalkeeper from 18 yards.

With Grant, Cairney and Wright linking well with Moffat and Rodgor up front Dunipace might have added more goals in the first half as they controlled the game comfortably. There was to be a scare though in the run up to half time as Wright was the subject of a terrible tackle that the Cumbernauld number 10 was very fortunate not to see Red for. Hapilly, Wright was able to walk away from the tackle.

1 - 0 at half time and Dunipace gaffer Derek Barron made some changes to his lineup in an attempt to kill the game off, but in the opening 15 minutes of the second half it was Cumbernauld who raised the tempo. Dunipace, through a combination of good defending and bad finishing were managing to stay in front despite constant pressure from the visitors in a spell where they failed to keep the ball anything like they had done so well in the first period.

The next goal though when it came was to be for the Pace. Bryan Grant picked up the ball on the right and played a fantastic ball into the run of Barry Rodgor. It was a difficult chance for the striker, but the away keeper made it easier by needlessly rushing off his line, allowing Rodgor to cushion his header over him and into the net for 2 - 0.

It appeared Dunipace would kick on from here and kill the game but Cumbernaul, to their credit, kept pushing the home side and pulled a goal back shortly after. The Cumbernauld man was allowed to run through a series of soft challenges to the edge of the Dunipace box. For all he shouldn't have been allowed to get so far his finish was excellent, drilling into Strachans bottom left hand corner.

With the game open again both teams were committed fully, but again Wright was to be the victim of a poor tackle that this time saw the Dunipace man leave the field with an ankle problem. Indeed Cumbernauld were fortunate to keep 11 men on the park when their number 10, who was lucky not to be sent off in the first half and had committed a series of fouls afterwards, felled Donnelly in the corner. The referre went to give the foul, but strangely changed his mind and in fact it was Donnelly who was booked only moments later for an identical foul on the same player.

Corner

As time passed Dunipace were again finding themselves on top playing some good football and the contest was over in the 85th minute when Sean McCafferty picked the ball up wide right following some good football and delivered a wonderful cross that was turned into his own net by the defender as Donnelly waited for the tap in at the back post.

And if this wasn't enough Dunipace made it 4 in the dying moments when Sean McCafferty's strike from outside the area landed at the feet of Grant. His touch was good and he drew the keeper before clipping the ball back to Donnelly for an easy tap in.

A good performance and a good result to take into next weeks league opener at Newmains where a similar performance will be required to take all three points.
