Central League: Second Division

Dunipace  Dunipace 5 - 0 Greenock   Greenock

With the weather turning to Spring conditions a better argument for summer football could not have been made than this game at Westfield. With the sun out and the heavy park a thing of the past Dunipace served up some of their best football of the season for the few who made it along.

James Orr returned to the starting lineup for the injured Warner Devlin and Keiron McIllduff continued his comeback from long term injury with another start and he was to prove influential in the game, involved in everything and a real nuisance for the visiting defence with his strike partner Rodgors.

Dunipace opened the scoring early in the half when Cairney, who gave a masterclass in dead ball delivery all afternoon, whipped in a near post corner and the afore mentioned McIllduff got across his marker to send a header beyond the keeer into the corner.

A great start, but more was to come from McIllduff when 5 minutes later the ball fell to him 20 yards out and from nowhere the young striker unleashed a superb strike that was beyond the keeper before he even realised a shot had been made. A fantastic goal at any level and everyone was delighted for Keiron who has had a torrid time with injury over the past couple of seasons. Dunipace will be hoping that this is the start to a return to form for a player regarded highly.

The third goal when it came went the way of Ryan McCafferty who, having spurned a good chance earlier in the match, made no mistake when presented with a second opportunity with a fine finish to claim his first goal for Dunipace.

Into the second half and any hope of a comeback the visitors had was put to bed very early when Rodger cleverly read the attempted back pass and intercepted the ball to coolly slot beyond the keeper for 4 - 0.

Dunipace made a number of good chances after that with the impressive Cairney, who was a standout on the day, at the heart of what was some excellent football at times. Greenock's only real chance when it came saw Strachan find himself one on one with the forward but, not wanting to be left out of things he made an excellent stop to turn the ball round the post.

With 20 minutes left Grant replaced the tireless wright in midfield and was to have his say in the game 5 minutes later when taking another fine ball from Cairney his inch perfect pass left Oates, who had overlapped brilliantly, in acres of space to pull back to McPhail who had got the run on his marker to finish high into the net. A better goal you'll struggle to see in Junior football and a fine end to an impressive performance.

7 more performances like this one and promotion will be within the reach of the Westfield side.
